Bressler & Busko Awarded Lake Region Healthcare Foundation Scholarships

(Fergus Falls, MN) Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2017 Healthcare Professions Scholarship.  Katie Bressler and Rachel Busko have each been selected by the Foundation to receive a five thousand dollar scholarship.

“The quality of applicants was outstanding and it was a very difficult choice for the committee to make,” said Foundation President, Larry Dorn.  “Both Katie and Rachel are very worthy of the award. We are glad to be able to help local students with the financial side of pursing medical careers and hopefully encourage them to bring their skills back home someday as well,” he added.

Katie Bressler is finishing her fourth year at the University of Minnesota Medical School and was Lake Region Healthcare’s Rural Physician Associate (RPAP) Student for the 2016-2017 school year.  In her application Katie stated “In the 7 months I have spent at Lake Region as a RPAP student, I have been afforded a wealth of experiences that have helped me define my goals in becoming a rural doctor who practices Family Medicine with Obstetrics.  The wonderful thing about being a rural physician is having the ability to give back to my community, my profession, and my college in very tangible and rewarding ways,” she added.  The review committee noted that her attitude of service combined with her exceptional grades made her application stand out.

Rachel Busko is finishing her third year at the University of Minnesota Medical School.  A strong sense of giving back stood out to the review committee in Busko’s application as well.  She explained in her application that “In my future rural community, I plan to contribute through professional and non-medical activities.  Providing free medical education opportunities in subjects like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, dementia, and end-of-life care (to name a few) engages the community and would allow me to reach people that I might never see as patients.  I want to encourage patients to feel comfortable with their health care providers by meeting people where they are, whether that is in my office or in the ‘real world’,” she said.

This was the second year of the LRH Foundation Healthcare Professions Scholarship program.  Applicants from this year who did not receive awards are encouraged to reapply.  Application information can be found on the Lake Region Healthcare’s website.
