Plus the Community Health Challenge Prize Winner Will Be Announced

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) invites the community to attend its 4th annual Community Health Expo on Thursday, April 20 from 3-8 p.m. at the Bigwood Event Center in Fergus Falls.  This event is free and open to the public and includes:

  • Free health screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, glaucoma, macular degeneration, skin cancer and peripheral arterial disease from 3-6:30 p.m.
  • Over a dozen health information booths from LRH and its wellness partners, including a special “Ask a Doctor” booth featuring Dr. Jason Glynn and Dr. Chris Rott, Orthopedic Surgery; Dr. Colt Edin, Internal Medicine; Dr. Angela Folstad, Pediatrics; Dr. Naomi Schmid, Podiatry; and Dr. JoEllen Kohlman, Cardiology
  • A free arthritis exercise demonstration by Sue Tungseth from LRH Physical Therapy at 4:30 p.m.
  • The personal stories of four health challenge participants (Dave Neese, Mary Budke, Wendy Schiesser and Mark Drechsel) at 5pm.

This event also serves as the culmination of Lake Region Healthcare’s 2017 Community Health Challenge, a challenge to “Shoot for the Moon” and move for a collective 238,900 miles (the distance from the earth to the moon).  From January 9 through April 14, 1,100 participants recorded their exercise mileage and used a conversion chart to translate activities other than walking or running into equivalent miles of exercise. The final mileage tally reached by the community will be announced at the Expo on the 20th.

If the goal is reached, a $3500 travel voucher, good to the winner’s destination of choice, will be given away at the Health Expo in a random drawing from those 18 and older participating in the challenge. Local schools and youth under 18 were also encouraged to participate. The youth grand prize is a new bike from Central Lakes Cycle. A $500 donation will also be made to the phy-ed department for the school with the highest per-student-mileage average during the challenge.

“The challenge was designed to give people extra motivation to start exercising or to keep exercising in the cold winter months, and hopefully continue the activity as part of a lifestyle commitment,” according to LRH CEO, Larry Schulz. “We knew that shooting for the moon was a stretch goal since it was double the distance recorded in last year’s challenge. But we also knew that our community likes to step up. Clearly, they demonstrated that this year and we are so impressed and inspired by how everyone rallied to meet this impressive challenge,” he added.

All prize drawings will take place after an entertaining rendition of “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader” featuring LRH physicians and local fifth grade students. The game show entertainment starts at 7 p.m., with the drawings immediately following.
