Angela Nord of Fergus Falls wins LRH Health Challenge Grand Prize

Over 600 attend Health Expo and Celebrate Successful Journey

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Over 600 people attended the Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) Community Health Expo at the Bigwood Event Center in Fergus Falls on Thursday night to take advantage of several free health screenings and demonstrations and to take part in the culmination of LRH’s third annual community health challenge. The Challenge for 2016 was for community members to log enough miles of exercise to travel “Around the World in  80 Days”. Since the goal was met, a grand prize travel voucher for $3500 good toward any trip to any destination was given away and the lucky winner was Angela Nord of Fergus Falls.

Nord logged 186 miles during the 80 day challenge and said it included all kinds of different exercise that she did along with her daughters. “We did a lot of walking, went to the Y, did some Yoga, Physical Therapy, danced and even taught a couple of phy-ed classes for the home school co-op – just to keep moving,” Nord said. “It was more exercise than I normally do and it was nice to have a good incentive to get moving each week so I would have miles to log,” she said.

Nord’s name was drawn at random from all participants in the challenge who were present for the event. A total of 785 signed up for the challenge and logged a total of 136,678 miles – more than enough to get around the globe not just once, but five times.  In addition to the trip, Phatty Nattie’s, CrossFit and HUB gift certificates, Fit Bits, an Apple Watch and a bicycle and $100 gift card to Central Lakes Cycle were given away.

“We were overwhelmed by the fantastic participation in the challenge and the tremendous turnout at the Expo,” said LRH CEO Larry Schulz. “This is a great indicator of our community’s interest and commitment to helping Fergus Falls become one of the healthiest places in Minnesota. There is clearly a lot of interest and value in living healthy and active lifestyles in this region and we are pleased to help encourage and foster this even further,” he added.

The event was created to get people moving during the cold winter months as part of Lake Region Healthcare’s Community Wellness initiative. Participants recorded their weekly miles of physical activity and the total was reported weekly to registrants through email, social media and on the LRH website.

In addition to the challenge prizes, community members who attended the Expo and took advantage of free health screenings were entered into a drawing for a Sportman’s Lodge Fishing Trip and a Glacial Lakes Spa at Grandview Lodge certificate. Those were won by Duane Dornbusch and Alice Neuleib.
