Emmy Nominated Film Screening and Panel Discussion on “Being Mortal”
Dr. Atul Guwande

Sponsored by LRH & LB Homes-Lakeland Hospice and Based on Dr. Atul Guwande’s Best Selling Book

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Lake Region Healthcare and LB Homes-Lakeland Hospice, through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Hospice Foundation of America’s John and Wauna Harman Foundation, will be offering a special film screening event and panel discussion in Fergus Falls on October 10th.

The Emmy-nominated film “Being Mortal” is based on the book of the same name by Dr. Atul Guwande. It delves into the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and investigates the practice of caring for the dying. The story follows surgeon, Dr. Atul Gawande, as he shares stories from the people and families he encounters. Then, when Dr. Guwande’s own father gets cancer, his search for answers about how to best care for the dying becomes a personal quest.

Following the film, attendees will be invited to participate in a panel conversation on how to take concrete steps to identify and communicate wishes about end-of-life goals and preferences. The panel will include medical experts, advance care planning facilitators and a community member who was put in the position of respecting the last wishes of her own child.

“This event is for everyone,” said LRH Chaplain, Deb Forstner. “We are all mortal. We all need to think about our end of life wishes so that whenever that time comes, the burden of those decisions are eased for our loved ones and our personal wishes are carried out,” she said.

There will be two options for community members to participate on Monday, October 10th. The first is from 9am to 11am and the second showing will be from 7pm to 9pm. The same format will be followed for both showings & panel discussions, and refreshments will be served at both showings as well. They will both be held at the Broen Light & Life Auditorium at 418 E Alcott Ave. The event is free and open to the public. More information is available on the Education & Events link at www.lrhc.org or by calling Chaplain Deb Forstner at 218.736.8077.
