Cancer Center to Host Survivorship Seminar Featuring Peggy Wellmann September 21

Continuing Education will be offered for healthcare professionals on September 22

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Lake Region Healthcare’s Cancer Care & Research Center (LRH CCRC) Cancer Center will offer a special seminar on the topic of Survivorship on Monday, Sept. 21st.  Survivorship is a growing topic of interest according the Alyssa Manning, NP at the Cancer Care & Research Center.

“Thanks to advances in medical research, the effectiveness of cancer treatment continues to improve. As a result, the number of people with a history of cancer in the U.S. has increased dramatically. As more people are surviving cancer, how long a person lives is no longer the only the focus.  It is also becoming increasingly important to focus on how well survivors are able to live after treatment,” she said.

“Survivorship begins at diagnosis, and includes people who continue to receive treatment to either reduce the risk of cancer coming back or to manage the chronic disease.  No matter how it is defined, we know that cancer care does not end when treatment is completed” adds Karen Wulfekuhle, LSW at the Cancer Care & Research Center.

The Survivorship Seminar will feature keynote speaker Peggy Wellmann RN, MS, AOCNS from the Chicago Area. Wellman is an accomplished Nurse Educator in the Pharmaceutical Industry, an Advanced Practice Nurse with Research Experience and expertise in Oncology/Hematology and Hepatology.

The Survivorship Seminar will begin at 6:30 pm. on September 21st and a light meal will be provided. Members of the Lake Region Healthcare Wellness team will be present to answer questions, provide information on available wellness opportunities on campus and in the community.   The seminar is free and open to the public, however space is limited.  Call 218-736-8688 to register for the event.

Sessions for healthcare providers and staff will be available on September 22, 2015 in the Cancer Center Conference Room at 8:00 am and 12:00 pm.  Survivorship Care: Planning for Action will offer healthcare professionals more details in outlining the requirements of survivorship, elements in building a care plan, integrating survivorship into practice.  One Continuing Education Credit will be offered for your participation.
