Speaker provides hope and guidance to cancer patients, medical staff and clergy members
(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) will host Deanna Thompson to speak to cancer patients and families, LRH medical staff and community clergy members Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14.
Thompson, a religion professor at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., has stage IV cancer. The author of “Hoping for More: Having Cancer, Talking Faith, and Accepting Grace,” Thompson discusses her experience with cancer and how faith has intersected with that experience.
LRH will host three presentations for different audiences; some are open to the public, while others are for specific groups. All sessions are free to attendees and will be held in the Cancer Care & Research Center conference room at 908 S Cascade St in Fergus Falls..
The first session “Accepting Grace When Hope is All You’ve Got” is for cancer patients, their families, LRH staff and the public. In this session, Thompson will offer suggestions on what to say and do that offers healing, hope and love to those dealing with cancer. This will be held at noon on May 13th.
Area clergy members, Stephen ministers and parish nurses are invited to the presentation “Where Faith and Suffering Intersect” at 9 a.m. on May 14th. Thompson will speak about the role of the church in serving those with chronic illness and how the church can be a role model for health and wellness.
The final presentation is for LRH staff only, as Thompson will discuss what cancer patients really need from their medical providers.
“We are elated to host Deanna Thompson at Lake Region Healthcare to bring to light the many different facets of dealing with cancer. As someone dealing with cancer, herself, she’ll be an excellent source of knowledge for our staff, our community and those who are also dealing with cancer,” Larry Schulz, LRH CEO, said.
