National Time Out Day Time for Surgical Safety Awareness

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – On June 10, National Time Out Day will be marked in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers around the country. Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) joins perioperative Registered Nurse Professionals across the nation in taking a "time out" to confirm correct patient, correct procedure, correct surgical site and other important information before every operative and other invasive procedure.

Time Out Day was created by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses in 2004 to raise awareness about the importance of requiring the entire surgical team to pause before all invasive procedures to communicate as a group and confirm key information about the patient and procedure to help prevent errors from occurring.

The perioperative nurses at LRH commemorated National Time Out Day with a public commitment to our patients, their loved ones and the entire surgical community by signing a Time Out Pledge and posting it throughout the facility on June 10th.  “When health care teams work well together, threats and errors can be recognized, prioritized, and managed before an adverse outcome becomes a reality,” said Surgical Services Director Kristi Carlisle-Hanson. “Pausing to recognize events like Time Out day are a good reminder to all of us about why we place such a high priority on patient safety,” she added.
