Financial Support for Cancer Patients Topic of October & November Sessions

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Patient education plays a major role in empowering patients and families with cancer. That’s why Lake Region Healthcare’s Cancer Care & Research Center (LRHCCRC) has developed an opportunity for patients and families to participate in an educational series to help people understand the disease, treatment, side effect management and other information to improve quality of life during treatment & beyond.

“Given the complex nature of the disease, cancer patients and families have a variety of information/educational needs throughout their cancer journey. Information concerning diagnosis, treatment and support services is typically the highest priority for patients and families,” according to Echo Breen, Administrative Director at the Cancer Center.

The educational forums will be held the second Monday of each month in the Cancer Care & Research Center Conference Room.  The next two sessions will focus on Financial Support for Cancer Patients and will be led by Laura Rich, Pharm D from Minneapolis.

October 13:  Part 1 - This session will highlight copayment assistance.  Often times, oral chemotherapeutics have a significant copayment attached to the filling of the prescription.  The financial implications of a cancer diagnosis generate fear- at times more than the diagnosis itself. Laura will talk about the assistance groups available for all types of cancer including income limits, medications and other potential covered expenses. Benefits will be an open topic for questions related to specific coverage.

Nov 10:  Part 2 – This session will outline Medicare Part B and Part D.  The complex nature of products and services covered by the various Medicare Parts, when coverage begins, and which ones cover prescriptions will all be covered.  This will be an excellent opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Medicare and ask questions to help you understand how to navigate its complexities.

All sessions are free and open to the public, but registration is requested to help plan for refreshments. Please call 218.736.8688 for information or to register.

Individual session topics and details for future meetings will be available on the “Education & Events” link at www.lrhc.org.
