Lake Region Healthcare hosts Students in Summer Health Care Internship Program

Three students spending summer at LRH learning health care careers

(FERGUS FALLS, Minn.) – Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) has received funding to host three interns who are learning about various aspects of healthcare careers this summer through the Summer Health Care Internship Program (SHCIP).

Casey Ward is a 2013 Fergus Falls High School graduate who is attending Concordia College in Moorhead pursuing a degree in Hospital Administration and Long Term Care Administration. Casey is interning in the Finance and Healthcare Information Management Departments and is learning the different aspects of the business side of a hospital. He says meeting all the different people behind the scenes at LRH has been very enjoyable and he is learning how challenging it can be to successfully and efficiently operate a hospital. Casey started his internship on June 11th and will be here through August 15th.

Cassandra Eerdmans is spending the summer in the Human Resources Department. She is a 2014 Fergus Falls High School and will be attending UND this fall majoring in Biomedical Engineering.  Cassandra says she is enjoying learning how to use all the new programs and working with some pretty great people in the HR Department. Typing job descriptions, making reference checks, processing new employees and prepping new employee packets are just some of the tasks she has been taking on. She says the internship has been a good experience to help her get out of her shell and feel more comfortable talking to people both in person and on the phone.

Andrea Moe is interning in the Emergency, Women’s & Children’s Health and Radiology departments as part of her preparation to obtain her Bachelor’s of Nursing Degree from North Dakota State University. She is a 2010 graduate of the Ashby High School and her internship experience involves providing patient care, patient transfer and patient prep for exams as well as observing and assisting with procedures. She says the most valuable lessons she has learned are about the importance of holistic patient care and effective patient communications. She is enjoying caring for patients while building on her nursing skills as well as getting to know her co-workers.  Andrea hopes to work as an RN in an emergency room or trauma center when she completes her BSN.

Funding for the LRH Summer Health Care Internship Program is provided through a contract with the Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, Minnesota Department of Health.
