The purpose of the HT position is to process tissue specimens for the gross and microscopic examination by the Pathologist.
This technical position requires a highly trained, specialized individual who can work well under stressful situations. The HT works closely with the Pathologist, surgery personnel, office staff, and physicians. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The incumbent has access to sensitive, confidential information and must be able to maintain those confidences. The incumbent establishes the work procedures and priorities within imposed deadlines.

Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities. Education/Special Skills: An Associate degree from an approved school including an internship under the direction of a Pathologist in an approved laboratory. Must be ASCP, or equivalent, registered or eligible. (If not currently registered, must pass the registry within 18 months of graduation of an approved school.) Ability to communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to operate a microtome, cryostat, tissue processor and computer keyboard/word processor equipment. Ability to follow detailed staining/coverslip procedures and develop new procedures as needed by the pathologist.  Successful completion of the pre-employment health screening process required.
Must be able to attend work site per schedule. Duties may require limited amount of non-scheduled overtime hours as work load requires.

The laboratory environment exposes the HT to toxic chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and minimal carcinogenic hazards.
